In this project, we address the problem of tracing the origins of knowledge. Conditions of modern society overwhelm and disorient individuals with accessible communication and information through a polyphony of narratives and raise the question about the authenticity of knowledge itself.
We attempt to examine the process of post-truth formation through the lens of the oldest surviving written story — the Epic of Gilgamesh.
The work is based on the Russian translation of the Epic from the Akkadian language made by orientalist and linguist Igor Dyakonov. By selecting fragments of the original text marked as lost, we “reconstruct” the gaps using AI, and then further alter the generated text through blackout poetry. Each interpretation causes a partial loss and distortion of meaning, visually illustrating the mutation of the original source.
