ABOUT ME

Hi there! I’m Alya Segova — multidisciplinary artist. I started out as a photographer and since then have expanded to other media including digital and analog collages, graphics, mixed media, art objecrs and installations.

My childhood was spent in Moscow of 90s. I was born surrounded by still-Soviet realities. But the Iron curtain fell on the eve of my first birthday, and a powerful stream of world mass culture poured into the country, which literally flooded the child’s consciousness. I am inspired by these bold fantastic images familiar to everyone, and on the other hand, by the visually poor reality of the post-Soviet spaces in which I grew up. I think it was these two moments that determined my visual language.

I explore space of weird, mythologizing everyday life and Soviet hauntology through the inclusion of typical and ordinary objects as old Soviet newspapers in my works, or turning them into a medium, for instance, creating an art object from an accidentally broken plate. I frequently apply a collage technique, combining the incongruous and trying to ‘reconcile’ images and symbols from completely different sources. In addition, I work with digital collages, mixed media, textiles, photography, graphics and installation.
