ABOUT ME
Hi there! I’m Alya Segova
— multidisciplinary artist. I started out as a photographer and since then have expanded to
other media including digital and analog
collages,
mixed media, performance art, textile and art objects.
The central theme of my practice is otherness and inappropriateness. Since childhood, I have been unable to fit into the narrow confines of communities, whether it’s a company in the yard, a subculture that resonates with me, or a new team at work. I’m always either not enough or too much. This pathological non-alignment led me to the topic of the Other and the feeling of myself as the Other.
I rely on sincerity, vulnerability, and imperfection when creating my work. I often choose questionable techniques and marginalized media, using found and non-artistic materials such as old magazines, concrete and broken plates. At the same time, I can freely combine them with sleek and glossy forms, for example, advertising lightboxes, creating the very effect of mismatch: my works cannot be called either absolutely punk or gallery.
My own story becomes the core of each project. In my research, I explore its connection with a broader social context, bridging the gap between nurturing my otherness and the possibility of understanding and searching for a similar Other resonating at the same frequency.
